The Olympus DS-2400 and DS-2500 Voice Recorders are high end consumer dictation recorders. 

By default these recorders are set to dictate in the Digital Speech Standard Pro (DS2) audio format. The recording files extension is ".ds2". While DS2 is the upgraded form and standard for professionals, some transcription users may find difficulties transcribing DS2 files with older or third-party software. Many transcription companies require to have the files in Digital Speech Standard Classic (DSS) to be compatible with a wider variety of software they are using.

DS2 files can be converted to DSS Player Pro for software to DSS,MP3,WAVE, and WMA, audio format files with the properties necessary to be compatible with transcription providers, by following the simple steps below.

1. Right click on the recorded file and select "Convert Dictation..."

2. Select "DSS" and click "Convert"

The dictation file will appear below the previous file, in the list of recordings.


To set the default recording format to DSS you will need to download and install the DS2500 Special Firmware. Once downloaded,


1. Go to the following URL: www.ybsales.net/support/FWUpDssClassic_DS2500.zip to download the Special Firmware to your computer in a location you can easily find it. Preferably to a temporary folder you create on your desktop. If your computer prompts "are you sure" you want to download the file just select "Keep" so the computer will continue the download.



2. Once done, select "Show in Folder".




3. Select the downloaded file, Right-Click and select "Extract All". By default your computer will ask you to extract all files in the same folder you have saved in the downloaded zip file.

You need to extract the files from the zip folder before you update the firmware in the DS-2500. Not doing so could cause the firmware not to install correctly. After the extraction process has finished you should see the file FWUpdateDssClassic_DS2500.exe.

4. Connect the DS-2500 to the computer that has the Special Firmware. If this is the first time the recorder has been connected to the computer, let the computer go through the found new hardware process before installing the special firmware.



5. Open the folder containing the special firmware and double left click on the FWUpdateDssClassic_DS2500.exe.

You should see the window displayed below: Click the start button.

6. Once the update is complete, click the finish button and disconnect the DS-2500.

This should change your default recordings to the DSS audio format.
